The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) has extended its yellow weather warning for hot conditions in the mountainous regions of Madeira, which will now remain in force until 18:00 on Tuesday, the 4th of August.
For the island’s south coast, the yellow warning remains active until 18:00 on Monday, August the 3rd. The warning has been issued due to the persistence of unusually high maximum temperatures.
The extension follows another exceptionally warm night across the archipelago. After recording the highest maximum temperature in Madeira’s IPMA network yesterday, at 30.4ºC, Pico Alto once again stood out by registering a tropical night.
The weather station, situated at an altitude of 1,118 metres, recorded a minimum temperature of 20.8ºC overnight, an unusually high value for that elevation.
Pico Alto was one of seven IPMA monitoring stations in the region where temperatures did not fall below 20ºC. The others were Santa Cruz Airport, Funchal Observatory, Funchal Lido, Ponta do Sol (Lugar de Baixo), Porto Moniz, Caniçal (Ponta de São Lourenço) and Selvagem Grande.
A minimum temperature of 20ºC or above is classified as a tropical night. While such conditions have become increasingly common in Madeira’s coastal areas, they remain relatively unusual at higher-altitude locations such as Pico Alto.
