Madeira Police Face Difficulties

The Union Association of Police Professionals (ASPP/PSP) has sent a letter to the Minister of Internal Affairs, following a working visit to the Regional Command of the PSP of Madeira, held on the 25th and 26th of June, where it identified several concerns related to the operating conditions of the police force in the Autonomous Region.

In the document, the union structure highlights a lack of manpower as one of the main difficulties, warning of the impact of the lack of personnel on the operational capacity and visibility of proximity policing.

The ASPP/PSP also expresses concern about the management of the National Unit of Foreigners and Borders (UNEF), considering that the diversion of professionals to airport functions has weakened the generic local police forces of Madeira.

Another of the points addressed is related to the wear and tear of professionals, which, according to the association, results from the frequent cancellation of rest days and periods to compensate for staff shortages.

The letter also mentions matters that remain unresolved, namely the revision of the insularity allowance, compliance with the rules on pre-retirement and the improvement of the health conditions of police officers.

The trade union association argues that, although it recognises the importance of the support provided by regional entities, it is up to the Central Power to assume its responsibilities in the management of internal security and in valuing the professionals who work in Madeira.

The ASPP/PSP is now waiting for a response from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the adoption of concrete measures to respond to the identified problems, ensuring that it will continue to monitor the situation and defend the rights and socio-professional interests of police officers.
