The stricken cruise liner, MV Hondius, was scheduled to arrive in Madeira on the 12th of May as part of its itinerary that included stops at Cape Verde and the Canary Islands.
A ship is still under quarantine off the coast of Cape Verde after seven passengers contracted hantavirus, leading to three deaths. This rare infection, mostly linked to rodents, has an overall mortality rate of about 36%.
Yesterday, the Cape Verde authorities refused to allow the ship to dock due to public safety worries. However, a medical team, nurses, and a laboratory specialist are now on board.
Plans are underway to medically evacuate passengers from the ship.
