During a plenary speech as part of a government discussion to combat tax fraud, the CHEGA deputy, Francisco Gomes, accused the Government of the Republic of “turning a blind eye to corruption associated with the PSD-Madeira.”
According to the deputy, the executive demonstrates a posture of connivance in proposing measures against tax fraud while ignoring serious practices that, in his opinion, are installed in the societal fabric of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. “They talk about fighting the tax fraud while protecting a rotten system, dominated by interests, schemes, and corruption in PSD-Madeira. This is not just hypocrisy. It’s complicity.” Francisco Gomes.
In a press release, Francisco Gomes said, “there is credibility in the fight against fraud when the government ignores situations, protects partisan interests, and covers up practices that harm the public purse. The government knows what is going on and chooses to do nothing. It chooses to protect, cover up, and pretend not to see. This is an insult to the Portuguese and Madeirans who work from sunrise to sunset and pay their taxes.”
The CHEGA deputy argues that the fight against tax fraud is completely discredited as long as there is no political courage to confront all cases of corruption, regardless of those involved. But he considers that the government’s stance feeds the impunity and destroys trust in institutions. Furthermore, “There is no fight against corruption as long as it protects a flawed system, fed by cronyism, favouritism, and vested interests. This is a regime that protects itself.”
Concluding, he added: “Either they clean up corruption once and for all, or they assume that they are part of it. Madeira can no longer stand this rotten system.”
