Cat Colony Control

Viewing it as a pioneering initiative, due to its size, organisation, and importance, the Municipality of Câmara de Lobos, in partnership with the Street Animals Association, will carry out a new Capture-Sterilise- Return (CED) programme this weekend.  The initiative will take place on the 27th and 28th of this month and affect around 100 cats.  These have all been identified within their own colonies.

On Friday, the programme will target cats in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, and on Saturday, Curral das Freiras and Jardim da Serra.

“This operation’s main objective is the ethical control of cat populations, through sterilisation and return to their habitat, contributing to the reduction of uncontrolled reproduction, improvement of animal welfare, and safeguarding public health.” Confirms a municipality statement.

The councillor responsible for Animal Protection, Salustino Jesus, said that “this action marks a change in the way the municipality responds to this reality, with a pioneering and organised intervention. We are targeting identified colonies with an effective solution that stabilises colony numbers and alleviates future problems.  This way, we can respect the animals and the population of our parish.”

The note clarifies that the CED program is widely recognised as one of the most “effective and humanised approaches in the management of cat colonies, allowing a more balanced coexistence between the population and the animals.”

In this sense, the Municipality of Câmara de Lobos asks the population not to feed the cats from Thursday to Saturday, only provide fresh water so that the cat-catching part of the programme is not compromised.
