Sickness Within the Police Force

Almost half of the 109 police officers of the Regional Command of the PSP of Madeira who participated in a scientific study had metabolic syndrome or were already classified as having a 10-year high cardiovascular risk, it was announced today.

In information released today, the PSP points out that the research published in the journal Healthcare “analysed cardiovascular and metabolic health, as well as health-related quality of life, shows a significant presence of risk factors that place police officers in a position of particular vulnerability.”

The study “demonstrates that PSP police officers are not only exposed to classic risk factors, but also accumulate additional risks associated with the demands of the profession, namely chronic stress, shift work, sleep deprivation, and irregular physical activity and exercise patterns.”

The investigation took place in the latter half of last year and found that 28.4% of participants had metabolic syndrome, a condition linked to a much higher risk of type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. Additionally, 20.2% were already considered to have a high 10-year risk of cardiovascular issues.

The authors of the investigation defend the urgent implementation of targeted occupational health strategies and the need to ensure the effective application of occupational medicine in the police context, states a spokesperson for the PSP.
