1,100 New Cancer Cases Registered Yearly

Regarding the presence of cancer in Madeira, Head of the Madeiran delegation, Ricardo Sousa, said that, on average, between 1,000 and 1,100 new cases arise per year.

The panorama is of an increase in cases, similar to the national and international realities, but this is also due, in his perspective, “to the work that has been done” by the national and regional health systems, which create better awareness and screening attendance.

While screenings are detecting more cancers, they’re often found at earlier stages, which increases the likelihood of successful treatment.

There are cancers in which the success rate is higher, such as breast and prostate, where success rates are around 80 to 90%, while others, such as lung or pancreatic cancers, are less successful.”

“Remember, cancer often has no symptoms, so it’s important to stay alert and see a doctor at the first sign of concern. Take part in screenings when invited, don’t be afraid, and don’t put it off. It’s always better to get the news early than to delay and face more advanced stages later.
