The President of the PS-M, Célia Pessegueiro, defends that the Region should be included in a national funding programme aimed at preparing the territory for extreme weather events.
The socialist announced her intention to present a proposal in the Regional Parliament to recommend to the Regional Government of Madeira that it request the Government of the Portuguese Republic to integrate the region into the PTRR, a financial instrument created to support territories affected by storms and other inclement weather, as well as to strengthen the capacity to prevent and respond to similar events in the future.
As she explained, this programme started by supporting municipalities on the continent hit by severe weather phenomena, but evolved into a more comprehensive strategy for territorial resilience and risk prevention. In this sense, she considers that there is no reason for the autonomous regions to be left out. “Being a national programme, it should naturally also cover Madeira and the Azores,” she said.
The initiative took place in Serra de Água, a place chosen symbolically because it was one of the areas affected by fires in 2024 and other episodes of bad weather, and was attended by deputies to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, namely: Gonçalo Leite Velho, Sílvia Silva, and Victor Freitas.
