German Tourist Falls 50 Metres

A 24-year-old German man was rescued today after falling more than 50 metres in the Levada do Curral and Castelejo area, leading to a vast rescue operation.

According to the rescue teams, the victim had an open fracture to one of the lower limbs and a deep cut on the head, a situation that required a quick intervention on the spot. The operation was coordinated by the Regional Command of Relief Operations (CROS), which mobilised the helicopter of the Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC).

The rescue also involved the Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Firefighters, including the corporation’s mountain rescue team, which mobilised eight personnel and several vehicles to rescue and stabilise the victim in a difficult-access area.

After the rescue, the man was transported by helicopter to the Cancela heliport at the SRPC facilities, where an EMIR medical team and an ambulance from the Portuguese Red Cross were waiting. The injured man was then driven to hospital and treated.
