The President of the Regional Government of Madeira said during the monthly debate of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, which was dedicated to the theme of tourism, that he has been assessing areas of flow management and planning in the most sought-after locations, and his plans are based on technical information and planning.
The minister defended that the Strategic options require rigor and reasoning. “We made some decisions, and we need to show why these decisions were made,” he declared, underlining the need for environmental impact studies to back up and support these new ideas.
As an example, he pointed out the intervention planned for Ponta de São Lourenço, one of the most visited in the Region. “I’ll give you an example: what is happening in Ponta de São Lourenço. Our idea is to make a park next to the roundabout, just after the roundabout, at the foot of the free trade zone. And then we have a bicycle corridor, a pedestrian circulation area, and a shuttle to take tourists to Ponta of São Lourenço.”
Albuquerque was responding to the Chega parliamentarian, who, in a request for clarification, asked for solutions for the buses that leave “always full” from that tourist spot, and pointed out the damage to mobility for residents.
According to the president, the objective involves organising access, improving mobility conditions, and reducing the car pressure in the area, creating more sustainable alternatives. At the same time, he assured that the articulation between tourist activity and the needs of the local population will be safeguarded.
“We have to take into account the need to ensure accessibility between the hotel structure and the Beach for residents. All this is being studied,” he assured.
