Second Firefighting Helicopter Needed

The second aerial means to strengthen the response capacity in Madeira “is included in the State Budget for 2026,” but there is still no defined schedule for its availability, said the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Freitas, guaranteeing that the Regional Government will demand clarifications from the mainland Government.

“This year, the second air means is planned, as in the 2026 State Budget,” said the minister, stressing that the Region will meet with the Secretary of State.

“I will meet with the Secretary of State because of this issue, which is, in essence, the second aerial means made available by the Government of the Republic.”

Micaela Freitas emphasised that the Madeiran Executive is closely monitoring the dossier and would like to know the specific deadlines. “As you know, our role is always to be on top of our priorities, and we will discuss deadlines.”

When asked about guarantees from the mainland Government regarding the provision of a second helicopter, she said that if it is included in the budget, then the State will provide it.  That is what we have to assume. She further made it clear that the regional position is to demand compliance with the commitment included in the national financial document: “What we want and will demand is that in 2026 this air resource be made available.”
