Rare Sighting of Leatherback Turtle

On Thursday, those on board the Madeira Sea Emotions – Boat Tours recorded a rare encounter with a leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest species of sea turtle, capable of exceeding two metres in length and 500 kilos in weight.

The observation was disclosed in a company post on social networks, accompanied by images of the turtle.

Speaking to DIÁRIO, Professor Thomas Dellinger, a specialist in Marine Biology at the University of Madeira, explained that, despite being a regular visitor to the waters of the Region, the species is rarely sighted due to its diving capacity and the limited time it spends on the surface.

“These turtles regularly pass through our exclusive economic zone, but they are difficult to see because they do not stay on the surface for long, and their black color makes them barely visible. It takes calm water to be able to observe them,” he clarified.

The specialist also highlighted the animal’s feeding and migratory behaviour. “They feed on jellyfish and can travel long distances, from tropical areas where they nest to regions further north, including the ocean around Madeira. They are fascinating animals and the second most common species in our waters, although encounters are always rare.”

According to the publication of Madeira Sea Emotions, the sighting was considered “a unique and extraordinary moment” that reinforces the company’s mission to promote environmentally conscious marine experiences in Madeira.
