German Citizen Drowns

A 59-year-old German citizen drowned this morning near the Ponta do Sol pier.

According to Captain Bruno Ferreira Teles, the National Maritime Authority was alerted at 09:56 by the Regional Civil Protection Service that a person had been allegedly dragged by a wave into the sea and was in difficulties.

According to the official, a second person entered the water to try to help the victim, but ended up returning to land without being able to rescue the victim.

Rescue resources were immediately activated, and a vessel from the Funchal Lifeguard Station was sent to the scene, with two crew members on board. The team eventually located the victim lying in a prone position in the water.

The crew members started basic life support manoeuvers and transported the man to the Calheta Marina, where they received support from the Calheta Volunteer Firefighters, who continued to perform CPR.  Despite their efforts, the man died.
