The Secretary-General of Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) has seriously condemned the reduction of almost 50% in the number of beds initially announced (by the Regional Government) for the long-term care network and 150 fewer beds in nursing homes.”
In a statement, Élvio Sousa recalls the announcement as a brutal cut made by the President of the Regional Development Institute (IDR), Maria João Monte, in a statement to RTP Madeira.
“Today we learned about another huge mess of this PSD/CDS Government, another promise made in the election campaign, broken!” States Élvio Sousa. “This is nothing more than a scam to deceive the elderly by the Regional Government that yet agan, fail to fulfill their promises.”
Élvio Sousa says that the population needs to “be aware of the successive cases of complete lack of commitment of this new PSD/CDS majority, which entertains itself with commercial and social visits, golf courses, but neglects serious issues that concern people, families, and need solutions and work.”
Referring to Miguel Albuquerque, the PSD, the CDS, José Manuel Rodrigues, and Rubina Leal, says that during the March 2025 election campaign, “all of them, without exception, announced the reinforcement of beds in nursing homes and in the long-term care network, and even filled some streets in the city with banners that read ‘creation of 1,003 beds.’
“Where is the CDS’s position on this shameful retreat?” Asks the opposition leader. “Is this how they want to combat the serious situation of problematic or social discharges?”
There are currently 1,330 elderly citizens on nursing home waiting lists.
