Despite official warnings about rough seas and large waves, many people disregarded the safety signs along Praia Formosa promenade. Throughout the day, several individuals ignored the risk of drowning and the temporary passage restrictions.
In view of the situation, FrenteMar Funchal reinforced the containment measures, placing chains to hold the metal barriers, in an attempt to prevent circulation beyond the areas considered dangerous, especially in areas of lower elevation, more susceptible to large waves.
Speaking to DIÁRIO, the administrator of FrenteMar Funchal, Marília Andrade, explained that the situation is recurrent and occurs practically every day, despite the regular patrols carried out by lifeguards and site information.
The most critical areas are between Praia Formosa and Câmara de Lobos, which passes in front of the Orca Praia hotel. It is an area of low-lying promenade which can become flooded during high tides and heavy seas.
A FrenteMar administrator said they’re now teaming up with the Maritime Police and the Civil Protection of Funchal and Câmara de Lobos, and have already held meetings to come up with better ways to stop people from ignoring safety notices.
One of the upcoming measures is updating the existing signage to clearly state the fines for anyone who ignores the prohibitions and safety barriers. The fines are already established by law, but new signs are needed to make their enforcement official.
FrenteMar Funchal asks people to be sensible, as ignoring safety notices and barriers puts them and emergency service personnel at risk.
