A large whale, in an advanced state of decomposition, was detected this afternoon in the bay of Câmara de Lobos, mobilising resources from the Captaincy of the Port of Funchal to the area.
According to what was possible to ascertain, elements of the Captaincy went to the coastal area to assess the situation and define the best way to remove the animal, taking into account its size, the state of decomposition, and the conditions of the sea. At this stage, the authorities are examining the technical options available for safe withdrawal.
The presence of the animal has generated attention along the coastline, since the bay of Câmara de Lobos is an area frequently used for maritime and leisure activities, in addition to being a point of tourist interest.
The removal of large cetaceans requires specialised means and careful planning, not only for safety reasons, but also for environmental and public health reasons, given the gases released during the decomposition process.
So far, the causes of the animal’s death are not known. The Captaincy will continue to monitor the situation and will work alongside other competent entities on the removal of the whale from the bay.
