The Autonomous Region of Madeira will be under yellow and orange weather warnings due to heavy rain and wind, especially on New Year’s Eve and the morning of the 1st of January, according to information provided by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).
On the south coast, an orange rain warning is forecast between 00:00 and 06:00 on New Year’s Day, where there will be periods of persistent and heavy rain. However, a yellow weather warning will be in place from 18:00 on Wednesday and again from 06:00 to midday on New Year’s Day.
Wind gusts are expected to reach 80 km/h, and a yellow warning has been issued.
In the mountainous regions of Madeira, the scenario is even more severe. An orange rain warning is in effect between 00:00 and 06:00 on New Year’s Day, with heavy and persistent rain. As in other areas, there are still several periods with a yellow warning of precipitation, before and after this interval. Wind speeds could also reach 115 km/h.
For the north coast of Madeira and Porto, a yellow precipitation warning is in force between 18:00 on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day for heavy rain, and a yellow warning has also been issued as wind gusts could reach 80 km/h.
