Snow and Rain Expected

Rainfall is expected to fall in the coming hours across the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), particularly on the northern slopes and in the island’s highlands, with the possibility of snow at the highest peaks. This update was shared by Ricardo Tavares, delegate of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), during an interview with JM/FM 88.8 FM on the evolving weather conditions.

“Rain will be a bit heavier, with larger accumulations on the northern slopes and in the highlands of Madeira Island, and there could be snow at the island’s highest points. The official noted that similar conditions are expected the next day, with temperatures staying about the same. However, rainfall should be lighter and less frequent, though there’s still a chance of snow in higher-altitude areas. Tomorrow, any precipitation that does fall during the day will likely be snow at the island’s highest points.

From Monday, the meteorological scenario will change with the approach of a frontal surface, associated with a warmer air mass. “On Monday, the trend will be for the temperature to increase,” said Ricardo Tavares.

According to the IPMA, the precipitation will become more persistent from Monday afternoon. It will last until early Tuesday morning.  Snow is not expected due to rising temperatures.

Asked about the forecasts for New Year’s Eve, the IPMA delegate stressed that there is still a high degree of uncertainty. Forecasts vary a lot for New Year’s Eve as rain is predicted for the 30th and 31st, but it is still too early to define exactly what the weather will be like at that time,” he concluded.
