The PS, in a statement, criticises the implementation of the PRR in Madeira and warns that, in the area of health, “the Region will lose vacancies in residential structures for the elderly and in long-term care.”
“According to information released by the media, Madeira will lose 328 nursing home places and more than 140 in long-term care, which is unacceptable, especially when there is already a lack of specialised accommodation for those that need it most,” says Marta Freitas.
The socialist deputy stresses that “the situation is particularly worrying, since the Region has about 1400 people on its official waiting lists. In addition to this number, more than 300 people are in a clinical discharge situation, but remain in health units due to a lack of suitable housing.”
“By not carrying out these projects, Madeira loses an opportunity to support those who need it most, and who have been waiting too long for answers and solutions.” She argues.Â
“The most critical thing is the fact that there is no guarantee that these investments will be refinanced in the future by other sources. For now, what we see is an effective loss of vacancies,” warns Marta Freitas, recalling that, under the RRP, “around 700 new beds were initially planned, which are now reduced to only 400, which is clearly insufficient for the Region. Especially as Madeira is a region with a growing elderly and fragile population.”
