Machico Beach Clean-up

Machico will host the TrashTraveller on Sunday, the 2nd of November.

The TrashTraveler, local communities, and environmental groups are teaming up for a massive cleanup at Calhau de Machico Beach. This effort, spearheaded by TrashCatch, in partnership with the Municipality of Machico and supported by Surfrider, Remote East Coasters, and GreenerAct, is focused on tackling plastic pollution along the Madeiran coast and sparking a cleaner oceans movement.

The event will start at 4 pm, next to Mare Alta, with a brief welcome session and safety guidelines given by the organisations. For two hours, until 6 pm, volunteers will join efforts to remove rubbish and plastic waste from the beach, with all the necessary material made available by Surfrider and the Municipal Chamber of Machico.

“Plastic pollution threatens the health of our ecosystems and the beauty of our coasts. Together, with local partners and citizens, let’s restore our beaches and set an example for the protection of the oceans, right here in Madeira,” said Audrey Zarlenga, founder of TrashCatch, in a press release.

According to the organisation, all participants must bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, thus ensuring a safe and comfortable experience. Participation is open to the community, but recommend prior registration on the GreenerAct platform to guarantee a place and support the logistics of the event.
