Tourists Ignore Danger

A JM reader shared photos and a video highlighting how tourists are still risking their lives on the cliffs near the lighthouse in Ponta do Pargo. In one instance, three children ran toward the edge, slipping dangerously close to the abyss, less than a metre from the drop. Fortunately, no serious incidents occurred. Other images captured teenagers leaning on rocks as they peered over the cliff face.

These are becoming increasingly frequent occurrences. The absence of signage, barriers, or any type of warning contributes to reckless behaviour, often motivated by the desire to take a good photograph.

Local authorities have been asked to come and assess the area and install suitable warnings, including information boards in several languages, barriers, and awareness campaigns with tour operators and local accommodation outlets.

“Madeira is a destination of nature and adventure, but safety cannot be secondary. Protecting those who visit us is also protecting the reputation of our island,” stressed the photographer.

The video can be viewed on the JM website.
