Credit Doesn’t Cover Disability Families

The Associação Sem Limites – Portuguese Association of People with Special Needs (IPSS), regrets that the draft law to extend subsidised housing credit to families of people with disabilities and to increase the maximum amount has been rejected in the Assembly of the Republic.

Their Press Release reads as follows:

“Last Friday, the 26th of September,  the Assembly of the Republic rejected all bills that aimed to extend the subsidised housing credit scheme to families and households of people with disabilities. The proposals were rejected with the PSD and CDS voting against.

Four legislative initiatives presented by the Socialist Party (PS), Livre, Pessoas-Animais-Natureza (PAN), and Bloco de Esquerda (BE) were under consideration, which proposed the extension of the benefits currently granted only to people with disabilities, to their households that live with them.

The proposals presented relevant measures, such as increasing the maximum amount of loans to 450,000 euros and creating a scheme for phasing down the subsidy in cases where the degree of disability was reviewed and reduced.

The rejection of these initiatives represents a setback for families of people with disabilities, who continue to face increased difficulties in accessing housing. The Portuguese Association of People with Space Needs deeply regrets this decision, as it considers that it compromises principles of equity, social justice, and inclusion.”
