Toboggan Workshop Should be World Heritage Site

Chega’s candidacy for the Parish Council of Monte, led by engineer Jorge Freitas, has defended the classification of the Monte Basket Cars Workshop as Material Cultural Heritage.

According to Jorge Freitas, this workshop “is unique, and represents not only a secular tradition, but also the courage, creativity and ability of the Madeiran people to transform difficulties into virtues.”

“The Monte Basket Car Workshop is a reflection of the ingenuity of many generations of Madeirans. Here is the know-how of centuries, which must be preserved and valued. The Basket Carts are unequivocally unique in the world and constitute a heritage that we cannot afford to lose,” he stressed.

The candidacy believes that this classification will bring “a new tourist and cultural appreciation to the parish of Monte and to the entire city of Funchal, reinforcing Madeira as an international destination of excellence.”

“We want to ensure that this workshop is never mischaracterised, that rules and traditions are respected, and that the memories of our ancestors live on. It is a wonderful heritage, a true tourist attraction we want to promote to the world,” concluded Jorge Freitas.
