Several groups of tourists have expressed their disgust at the amount of litter and animal waste found in some parts of Funchal. They’ve also complained about the mattresses and other objects left rotting at eco points.
The situation was evident at Pico dos Barcelos, where a group of foreign visitors came across scattered waste and signs of vandalism at the site. Some tourists told JM that this scenario was strange, recalling that, in previous visits, the island took greater care with the cleaning and conservation of public spaces.
Newspapers were informed of the situation by several tour guides, who had also noticed the general lack of care at many of the island’s panoramic viewpoints.
