Following the news published today in DIÁRIO, under the heading ‘Albuquerque rule shuts down half of AL accommodation,’ the Presidency of the Regional Government press office has issued a further statement clarifying that Miguel Albuquerque has defended AL limits in Madeira, well before the CORTEL scandal broke out.
According to Quinta Vigia, on the 21st of July, during the inauguration of a new local accommodation unit, at Rua do Til – the Villa Til Gallery – which resulted from the rehabilitation of a small farm, Miguel Albuquerque said, as part of a set of measures for the tourism sector, it is essential that AL is contained in heritage rehabilitated properties, adding, in this sense, that tourist accommodation will be contained within blocks of AL apartments to ensure that residents can live quietly in their own homes without the pressure of tourists coming and going. He went on to confirm that the focus for AL is on the rehabilitation of buildings located in the city and the historic centre of Funchal.
Meanwhile, on the 25th of July, during the Madeira – Tourism 2014 – 2024 book launch, the President’s position was again publicly reiterated. According to a press statement from Quinta Vigia, the President’s opinion is “framed in a set of measures aimed at the future of tourism in the Region, to ensure its growth and quality for all.”
However, on the 26th, news broke of the AL apartments in the CORTEL cooperative apartment complex.
