For the second consecutive year, the Banana Exhibition has been cancelled, under the reasons of ‘force majeure.’ Following this announcement, the JPP questions, “what is the Regional Government afraid of not fulfilling? What was promised in March this year has been blocked, and for a second year the Banana Show has been cancelled.
Rafael Nunes, Deputy and Vice-President of the Regional Legislative Assembly, considers this cancellation strange. In a statement, he said:
“This is because the Regional Government, the current Regional Secretary of Agriculture and the PSD/CDS bench, recently during the discussion of the Government Programme and the Regional Budget, praised themselves over their success in managing the island’s banana’s, which, as we know, has been a disastrous management system for banana growers. If they were doing it right and knew they were handling the banana economy well, members of the PSD/CDS governing alliance, including Miguel Albuquerque would attend the festival, as they have always done in the past, ready to be applauded by the region’s banana farmers, or are they afraid of being heckled again?”
Rafael Nunes adds that the protest following the cancellation of the Banana Festival is a sign that the sector is not doing well.
