Politican Accused of Sexism

THE FREE Madeira repudiates “with total vehemence the statements made by the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, when referring to the deputy Sílvia Sousa Silva of the Legislative Assembly of Madeira as a ‘girl’

According to the party, “this type of language is unacceptable in any circumstance — and it becomes even more serious when it comes from a member of the Regional Government, in full exercise of its functions.” The use of a derogatory and sexist term to refer to a woman parliamentarian reveals an attitude of institutional disrespect, sexism, and profound lack of decorum.”States a spokesperson for the Livre Madeira Party.

They further add that “women who hold political office do so with democratic legitimacy and should be treated with the same respect and dignity as any other representative elected.”

Trying to diminish someone using offensive expressions is to attack not just a person, but democracy itself.”

Furthermore, the party wants a formal and public apology from Eduardo Jesus, and calls on the Madeirans to condemn this behaviour, as incompatible with democratic values.”

And he concluded: “The fight against sexism and gender discrimination cannot be done with words alone — it is in the actions and reactions to episodes like this that show our commitment to equality within institutions.”

The fallout has been interesting. Eduardo Jesus commented that he had only used words that are in a dictionary.

In a statement, defending his position, he added that:

“The terms I used – it was more than one – are in the Portuguese language dictionary and, as you can see, they are adjectives that we, very regularly, use and that the popular lexicon uses frequently. People use these terms every day and in everyday speech.”

The trouble is that his comments have caused uproar, widespread indignation, and calls for his resignation are multiplying.

The trouble is he called Sílvia Silva a girl, and Sancha Campanella full of %%%%, and the deputy of Juntos Pelo Povo (Rafael Nunes) a ‘horror clown.  Not the brightest thing to do in front of an open mic.

Guida Vieira reacted to the words spoken by Eduardo Jesus when he referred to three opposition deputies in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira, and believes that the current Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture should resign.

“From everything I have heard and read, I think the incident needs to be nipped in the bud. The least that those who defend him should do is take him to see a psychiatrist and ask for a prolonged leave of absence.”

She later recalls the verbal attacks made towards her by the previous President of Madeira, but over the years, she has felt that women are respected within government, something she no longer values as true.
