The seismographs of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) recently recorded two earthquakes.
The first ‘quake’ occurred at 19:34 yesterday, off the south coast of Funchal. Registering 1.7 on the Richter scale, it had a depth of 3 km.
At 01:22 this morning (16th of June), a second 2.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded off the northeast coast of Porto Santo. The quake had a depth of 22km.
Given the magnitude and distance from the coast, the earthquakes were not felt by the population.
