The Bishop of Funchal, D. Nuno Brás, commented yesterday at the beginning of the Conclave that will elect the successor of Pope Francis, stressing that he does not have specific expectations regarding the result, but expressed full confidence in the process and in the Church.
“I don’t expect anything. The Pope who comes will be our Pope, and therefore we will welcome him as Pope and we will be listening to what he has to say, to the Church and the World.
Regarding the fact that Madeira once again has a cardinal participating in the election of a Pope, and who is said to be one of the favourites for the election, the Bishop of Funchal recognised the importance of the moment for the Region.
“If it’s him, so much the better,” said the bishop. “But I don’t know who is going to hold Madeira, with a Pope and Cristiano Ronaldo,” he joked, underlining the affection that the Madeiran people have for D. Tolentino Mendonça.
However, he said he wasn’t speculating and would wait patiently for the announcement.
