Eduardo Leite, from the University of Madeira, spoke today about the Genesis Project – the construction of lagoons and rainwater infiltration systems in the Ribeira Brava river basin.
The official explained that the project, which will run for four years and is currently in its first year of execution, foresees a total investment of 10 million euros, of which one million will be directly channelled to the University of Madeira. This project is proof that resources exist in different sources. And we need to work together for the common good,” he said, reinforcing that the initiative involves about 20 partners from six different countries, all with the common goal of protecting water and supporting sustainability.
Among the measures planned are the implementation of nature-based solutions, increasing the climate salience of water structures, with the creation of prototypes, protection of aquifers, and reuse of water resources.
“Madeira has the opportunity to be one of the case studies whose model can then be replicated in other parts of the world. That’s our idea,” he concluded.
