Airport: Constraints Possible

In a social network post,  a spokesperson for Madeira Airport warns that “adverse weather conditions may condition airport operations.”

Therefore, they ask all passengers to confirm the status of their flights before arriving at the airport. The airport seems to be working normally despite disruptions to flights during the week.

At 16:00, the airport confirmed that 55 km/h gusts had been recorded earlier in the day but on average were around 27 km/h.

An aborted landing caused much admiration from Madeira Airport Spotting members who were very surprised by the very reactive actions of an EasyJet Airbus A320 pilot who was struggling to land yesterday.

The aircraft, coming from Bordeaux (France), was forced to abort the landing due to strong winds.  According to reports from Madeira Airport Spotting, the aircraft pilot made an “insane go-around, while performing an escape maneouver by sharply turning right over the airport runway.  Leaving those watching, somewhat breathless. It was certainly ‘Top Gun-esque!”

The ‘go-around’ is a standard safety procedure in aviation, performed when the pilot considers that the landing cannot be completed under safe conditions, due to weather factors, runway obstructions, or other operational factors.

It should be noted that yesterday, as a result of the effects of Depression Martin, wind gusts of more than 120 km/h were recorded in the Airport area, which caused the cancellation of 11 flights and delayed a further 12.
