New Hospital Will Cater For Oncology Patients

The Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructure (SREI) refuted BE’s statements about the alleged gaps in the project of the new Central and University Hospital of Madeira. At issue are statements made by the BE last Sunday, 2nd of March, during a campaign action, where it was pointed out that the new hospital will not have a radiation oncology department or a psychiatric unit. The BE suggested that the private oncology clinic next door to the hospital would be catering to its ‘cancer’ needs.

In response, Pedro Fino stated, that the new hospital, “has an area of about 1. 800 m2 for radiotherapy, oncological treatments, which will include, among others, two Radiotherapy rooms, a Computed Tomography room, a Brachytherapy room, a Radio-Surgery room, as well as a set of medical offices, treatment rooms and recovery areas.”

In addition, the SREI adds that the future hospital unit also has an area of about 3,200 m2 “Psychiatric Unit, with specific areas for Adult Psychiatry, Child Psychiatry and Drug Addiction Treatment Unit, in outpatient and inpatient regimes, including, among others, 14 rooms for adult hospitalisation (2 isolation rooms), 9 rooms for pediatric hospitalisation (2 isolation rooms), medical offices, treatment offices and therapy rooms.”
