The Left Bloc (Bloco de Esquerda – BE) visited the construction site of the new hospital and has denounced the deplorable lack of a Radiation Oncology Unit scheduled for this project. The party, therefore, asks how is the government going to guarantee radiotherapy and oncology treatment for patients using the Regional Health System.”
Of course, there is a simple explanation, says party leader Roberto Almada: “just look next door. There is a private radiation oncology clinic, which SESARAM will pay to provide oncology treatment for National Health users.”
As such, Roberto Almada challenged the Regional Secretary for Health and Civil Protection, Pedro Ramos, about his decision to pay a private company rather than invest in a hospital oncology clinic.
“We cannot continue to spend treasury money, paying millions to private clinics, when we can offer oncology treatment through the public hospital”, defends Roberto Almada. “This is an unforgivable failure.”
Furthermore, the BE stresses that “SESARAM also does not guarantee the construction of an acute unit for the hospitalisation of psychiatric patients [at the Central and University Hospital of Madeira]. This is a need that has already been raised by many people, including mental health technicians.”
Concluding, he said:
“We need a hospital that can treat most of the diseases that exist and treat our population. This, apparently, will not happen with the new hospital. But, if we are sensible, we have time to amend these mistakes as the hospital will not be finished until 2027.”
