During a presentation, the Public Security Police (PSP), confirmed that in 2024, 3,845 traffic accidents were recorded, resulting in 12 deaths, 73 serious and 1,158 minor injuries. Compared to 2023, there was an increase of 5.5% in the total number of accidents and 3.3% in minor injuries.
According to the data released, in addition to the almost one thousand drivers arrested, the PSP identified crashes as the main cause of serious injuries and fatalities, often associated with speeding or speeding in bad driving/road conditions. According to the PSP, “until we can improve drivers reactions to conditions and safety, we will not be able to reduce the number of of accidents.”
Although only 9% of accidents involved motorcycles, they accounted for 50% of fatalities and 85% of serious injuries. The PSP reinforces the need to raise awareness among motorcycle drivers about the risks of speeding and the importance of using personal protective equipment, such as helmets and appropriate clothing.
Despite the reduction in the severity of accidents, the data indicate an increase in accidents, reinforcing the need for preventive measures to reduce risky driving behaviour on Madeira’s roads.
