Archipelago Passengers Exempt Transfer Service Fees

Passengers residing in Madeira or Porto Santo, tranferring through the region’s airports with another island of the archipelago as their final destination, will soon be exempt from the collection of security fee (PT) and service fee to passengers (YP). This measure is part of a proposal for a decree-law of the Government of the Republic and on which the Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat for Economy, Tourism and Culture, has already issued a positive opinion.

In practice, the planned change allows all resident passengers who present a consecutive ticket that transits through any of the airports in the Region (Madeira or Porto Santo) with the other airport as its final destination (Porto Santo or Madeira, respectively), will no longer be charged PT and YP fees that currently make up the total value of the ticket.

In a statement, Eduardo Jesus stated:

Our Regional Government welcomes another achievement in terms of air transport, after the already announced important changes to the air transport regime, Social Mobility Allowance for students and non-resident National. In less than a year, we have already managed to resolve situations that had been pending since 2015, despite all the efforts made by the Regional Government of Madeira. All the changes now proposed by the Government led by Luís Montenegro and which have deserved a positive opinion from the Region will greatly benefit passengers residing in Madeira and Porto.

Currently, consecutive tickets are only available through TAP, Azores Airlines, and Binter Canarias, for routes that originate from and/or final destination Porto Santo. In this context, it should be noted that the Decree-Law in question provides for exemption from charging fees at the transfer airport, even when the connection to/from outside the Autonomous Region of Madeira, is i.e. the case of Binter Canarias.

Currently, a round trip, with Porto Santo Airport as the final destination with flights connecting connection via Funchal, PT, and YP fees total 41.24 euros. For the Regional Government, the proposed reduction is significant and deserves the support of the Region, “not least because it harmonises a practice already in force at certain Portuguese airports.”

Like this the new diploma mainly improves accessibility to the island of Porto Santo, particularly in the winter period, when direct flights from connection to the national territory is very punctual, which requires residents and visitors to connections via Madeira Airport.

Or opinion issued by SRETC also supports the proposal of the Government of the Republic in the concerning the facilitation of the removal of aircraft abusively parked in the airport infrastructures, despite the fact that we do not have recent registration of situations of this nature at the Airports of the Region. The Government Regional understands that the optimization of the space available on the parking at Madeira Airport and Porto Santo is “crucial”, given the existing physical limitations and the increasing increase in air, commercial and commercial traffic and non-commercial.
