Since then, what was supposed to be temporary accommodation in the Bairro do Estabelecimento Prisional do Funchal, has become permanent.
Although they are not being charged rent, families housed there deplore the lack of solutions from public entities, with others saying the lack of permanent housing has led to depression and other mental health issues.
