New Marine Reserve Proposal

The ‘Força Madeira’ coalition (PTP (Portuguese Labour Party), MPT (Earth Party), and RIR (Reuse, Inlude, Recycle)) today defended the creation of a marine park on the coast of Funchal, more specifically between the pier da Pontinha and Praia Formosa. The idea is to “protect marine species, which are at risk of extinction.”

The coalition considers it vital to” guarantee the sustainability of marine species for the future, for if things continue the way they are, future generations will have no idea what a wrasse or the wrasse whiting is,” warned Raquel Coelho.

The head of the coalition for the 23rd of March elections also recalled that the creation of a navy-protected area in Funchal is an old promise that has been successively postponed.”

“Marine life is not the same as it was 20 years ago. You only have to go to one of our beaches to see that.  All that’s left are crabs and sea urchins.”
