The PSD Must Change

Manuel António says that it will not be possible to be associated with any list headed, by Albuquerque. The former governor thus reacted to the latest statements by the President of the Regional Government and leader of the PSD-Madeira.

Through a statement, he states that “the PSD-Madeira must offer the people of Madeira and Porto Santo a solution policy that serves them and that can prevent the worsening of the current political crisis in the Region. Under the leadership and candidacy of Dr. Miguel Albuquerque, instead of regaining the longed-for stability, we will sink further into political turmoil and crisis.”

He adds that “for a long time, this situation has been avoided, namely with the request for an extraordinary elective congress of the PSD-Madeira, on which no position has yet been received from the party itself. He therefore reiterates “the urgent need for this to happen as soon as possible.”

Unfortunately, the president of the party does not seem to share the interest in listening to the party, repeatedly ignoring the express request of 540 militants for a different course”. Manuel António

He continues: “The people of Madeira and Porto Santo know our position on the direction that the party and the governance of the Region are following, which moves away from the true interest of Madeira.”

In this sense, he says again that his path “diverges profoundly from that which the current leadership has decided to tread.”

As a social democrat, he defends a vision different for Madeira and for the PSD, based on stability, commitment to citizens, and the democratic strengthening of the party. In this context, it becomes evident that it is not possible to find consensus with the project led by Dr. Miguel Albuquerque. For this reason, it cannot be if it will disappoint the Madeirans who believe in our project and path, truly committed to the interests of the Region and the values of the party.” Manuel António

“In order to preserve our coherence and convictions, we make it clear that it will be possible to join any list headed by the current president, whose position does not defend the best interests of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and of the PSD, remaining determined in the purposes for which we have been fighting and that best serve the party, its militants and the population in general,” concluded Manuel António.

Responding to this, the President of Madeira added:

That he remains available to integrate Manuel António Correia and his supporters within the party so that there is no internal “fratricidal war.” The PSD-M leader does not commit to giving way to his opponent in the executive in an eventual victory in the regional elections, but he also does not rule out this hypothesis by appealing to the unity of the party.

“I can’t talk about the government. What I can say is that I am available to – Manuel António, he is a relevant militant of the party – to join this struggle.” Interestingly, Miguel Albuquerque was accompanied by some of the supporters of the former Regional Secretary.

Albuquerque once again reaffirmed that he was willing to search for an internal “solution,” stressing that the opponent is outside the party.
