Chaos persists in the Emergency Department of Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal. There are countless stretchers with patients ‘parked’ along access corridors in the hospital building.
“It’s unbelievable the amount of stretchers in the corridors. You almost can’t walk through.” said one witness to DIÁRIO morning.
Stretchers with patients not only block the main corridors of the Emergency Area, patients are also lined up on trolleys in the medical, surgical, and orthopedic areas of the hospital.
As DIÁRIO has been reporting, since the end of last year, the Emergency Department of the Central Hospital of Funchal has registered an influx of sick people and, consequently, facing difficulties in finding room for them.
Over the weekend, nearly fifty patients were left waiting in the Emergency Department due to a lack of hospital beds.
