Scabies is highly contagious, and Aristotle once referred to it as ‘lice of the flesh.’ It is caused by a mite (sarcoptes scabiei – hominis) and is transferred via skin contact.
Symptoms include:
Severe itching which is usually worse at night.
Itchy lines and bumps on the fingers, hands, wrists, arms, legs, and midriff.
Enlarged bumps on genitalia (men) and breasts (women).
Needs to be treated as it can lead to secondary infections, especially by Streptococci, and cause acute infections. Also, people with weakened immune systems can contract a rare condition called ‘Crusted Scabies which is very contagious.
