Second Battery Plant in Caniçal

The President of the Government, Miguel Albuquerque, today visited the second Battery Power Plant to be installed in the Region by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), in Caniçal. The completion of this work is scheduled for the end of this year.

In a statement, it was said:

“The installation of this second battery system on the island of Madeira aims to create the conditions for strengthening the capacity of renewable electricity production, through the replacement of the rotating reserve and support in the management of the grid. This will allow renewable electricity production rates of more than 50% and create a safer electricity system.”

The Caniçal Battery Power Plant represents an investment of 15.9 million euros, co-financed by European funds, and has a usable capacity of 18.7 MW/16.1 MWh (at the beginning of its life).

Miguel Albuquerque also viewed the synchronous compensator. This device aims to contribute to the safe operation of the electrical system and renewable energies.

The work is in the final stages of execution, awaiting the arrival of heavy equipment for installation in the main nave and the transformer cells.
