PCP Present Ferry Proposal

The PCP has presented in the context of a discussion in the specialty of the State Budget for 2025, a proposal that during the next year, the Government of the Republic ensures the existence of a regular maritime passenger transport line between Madeira Island and the Portuguese mainland,” said Ricardo Lume in a press release.

According to the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, it is up to the State to promote the correction of inequalities derived from distant insularity in Portuguese territory. It is on this assumption that the Government of the Republic must guarantee regular and accessible transport for the mobility of the Portuguese within the national territory and, in particular, for residents on the islands.

“The establishment of a maritime passenger transport service between Madeira Island and the Portuguese mainland is of national importance, and corresponds to a strategic priority to favour national cohesion and integration and is a fair aspiration of the Madeiran people,” added the communist leader.

Ricardo Lume concluded by stating “it is important that this proposal is approved and executed, as it is inconceivable that an island and ultra-peripheral region like ours does not have a maritime passenger connection with the mainland.”

“Now we will see which parties in the Assembly of the Republic effectively defend the interests of our Region by voting in favour of a maritime connection,” concluded Ricardo Lume.
