The CDU was in Santo da Serra today to “give voice to the stallholders and customers” of the Agricultural Market who, according to a statement from the party, demand the Municipality of Santo Cruz to take accountability of the degenerative state of the market and infrastructure.
Ricardo Lume, leader of the CDU, said, that the party was contacted by several stallholders who usually, on Sundays, sell their agricultural products and handicrafts at the Santo da Serra Agricultural Market, expressing their concern over the degradation of the site.
The CDU leader said that throughout his visit he spoke to stallholders and visitors to the Santo da Serra Agricultural Market who confirmed “that whenever it rains the place turns into a swimming pool leading to spoiled produce/handicrafts, general inconvenience and health and safety implications for all who work and visit the market. Furthermore, most stallholders admitted to having to use buckets to catch rainwater as the roof leaks.
The CDU further indicates that the stallholders and other vendors all pay rent and as such should have a workspace that is considered in good repair and free from leaks and flooding.
Ricardo Lume concluded that “the stallholders and customers of the Santo da Serra Market are concerned about this situation and are promoting a petition addressed to the Municipality of Santa Cruz to demand that works be carried out on the roofs of this market to ensure working conditions and enjoyment of the market throughout the year.”
