Steamed Rat and Cockroach Surpise

The ADN – National Democratic Alternative party claims to have received reports of rat and cockroach infestations in support structures for people with disabilities under the tutelage of the Social Security Institute of Madeira, a situation that “has been worrying the families of care centre users.”

“The CACI – (Training Activity Centres for Inclusion) welcome people with disabilities and other comorbidities who spend the day there and carry out various activities. Throughout the day several meals are prepared and there have been reports from users about the presence of rats and cockroaches in some of the centre’s kitchens,” denounces the ADN, in a press release.

Miguel Pita says that it is common knowledge that “the presence of rats and cockroaches in a kitchen where meals are prepared can trigger food contamination, generating food poisoning.” “The same situation in a commercial establishment would lead to a fine and its closure,” adds the ADN-Madeira party, which “does not understand how this situation can occur in a public service kitchen which should be subject to regular disinfestation.”

ADN-Madeira claims to know that at the origin of this problem is the non-compliance with disinfestation payments in some of the existing CACI in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, leading to the non-renewal of the respective contracts and now it is the employees and users who have to deal with this “unpleasant and dangerous reality.”

“ADN-Madeira considers it important that the Social Security Institute clarifies this situation, since public health is at stake, as well as the safety of people with disabilities and in situations of fragility.”
