According to data released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, based on information provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, 458.4 thousand passengers transported on 3,042 aircraft arrived and departed the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in September this year, reflecting year-on-year rates of change of +3.2% and -0.8%, respectively. In the first nine months of 2024, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +0.2% and +3.9%, in the same order.
Each aircraft (considering together those that landed and took off) carried, on average, around 155 passengers (150 in September 2023) at Madeira airport, while at Porto Santo that figure reached 107 passengers (100 in the same month last year).
In September 2024, the movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 5.3% in international traffic and 0.9% in the domestic segment.
At Madeira airport, international traffic (55.5% of the total) predominated over domestic traffic (44.5%). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a preponderance of domestic traffic (86.1% of the total), but with a greater disproportion compared to August 2024.
During this reference month, scheduled flights at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira accounted for 93.2% of the total number of aircraft handled and 95.0% of the passengers (90.4% and 92.1% in the same period of the previous year, respectively).
Last month, the occupancy of aircraft handled at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was around 88.5%, with Madeira airport reaching 89.1% and Porto Santo 80.8%. In the same period last year, the occupancy rate was lower both in the two regional airports (86.8%), as well as in the airports of Madeira (87.8%) and Porto Santo (75.8%).
From January to September 2024, passengers embarked and disembarked at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira amounted to 3,837.4 thousand, half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located in the national territory, which includes domestic and domestic connections (47.2% of the total as a whole) and another to international (52.8%). Within the scope of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination of international flights from the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (28.7%), followed by Germany (20.0%) and France (9.3%).
