European Deep-Sea Research Hub

The coordination of the European project ‘TWILIGHTED’ is in charge of MARE-ARDITI and will be presented this Thursday, the 24th of October, at the Golden Residence Hotel, in Funchal. The opening session will be attended, among others, by the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque.

The presentation of the project starts at 09:15 and includes the sessions “The Twilighted Project”, “Unraveling the Biology of the Deep Sea in the Oceanic Islands of the Atlantic through an Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Approach” and “Combining Technology and Research in Marine Sciences using Applied Underwater Robotics Laboratories.”

After a brief break, “Deep Sea in Madeira – 200 years of Science and Research,” “Documenting the Deep Sea of Madeira,” “Five years of Sustained Research on the High Seas in the Azores” and “TwinDEEPS Project” will follow. Before closing, there will still be time for a small debate on the topics covered.

The innovative project is part of the Horizon Europe programme, in the Twinning strand. Its main objective is to revolutionise research, development, and innovation in national deep waters, and to enable MARE in this type of research, using low-cost technology.

Coordinated by João Canning-Clode, director of MARE’s Regional Research Unit in Madeira (MARE-ARDITI), TWILIGHTED has a total funding of 1.5 million euros, an investment that will be allocated to specialised human resources, training, workshops, organisation of an international conference, exchange between teams and participation in scientific expeditions.
