Manuel Pedro, President of the Municipal Assembly of Câmara de Lobos, was the first to take the pulpit in the solemn session of the 189th anniversary of the municipality.
From there he discussed the weaknesses of the parish in the face of the risk of natural disasters and the difficulties posed in terms of relief and mitigation of its effects to highlight the importance of the construction of the road connecting Curral das Freiras to Jardim da Serra, as well as rejoicing in the “centenary claim” to connect Curral das Freiras with Boaventura.
Manuel Pedro understands that although these accessibilities would not only contribute to solving the problem of the safety of the populations, but also to the creation of a new tourist circuit, it will not be enough. It is also necessary, as he argues, to reorganise the territory, adopt stricter criteria in the construction of new housing, and in the provision of safe housing alternatives in places of extreme risk.
In this sense, the President of the Assembly considers it important that municipalities reflect within the scope of the Association of Municipalities of the Region on what to do, not only to prevent the risks of fire, but also of its intermunicipal spread.
“Shame” only came in the form of the inter-municipal discussion regarding the application forms for the new tourist tax; the options taken will create injustices.
