Mackerel: A Way to Stop Alzheimers?

Mackerel will be highlighted in a seminar that will take place on Thursday the 19th, at 9:30 am, in the Magalhães Auditorium of the Portuguese Institute Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), in Algés, in co-organisation with DOCAPESCA.

According to a statement, shared on the IPMA website, this initiative “seeks to underline the importance of a diet rich in mackerel in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive aging, and aims to highlight the nutritional potential of this accessible and cheap fish.”

According to Narcisa Bandarra, researcher and head of the Aquaculture, Valorisation, and Bioprospecting Division of IPMA, “the main conclusions of a study on the Omega 3 Index in the Portuguese population and the contribution of fish to a healthy diet” will also be presented.

In this event, which will be attended by the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar, the results of the ‘NewFood4Thought’ and ‘Controlled Fish IV’ projects will also be presented. These projects seek to demonstrate “the beneficial effect of fish consumption on health, in particular the potential of mackerel in the prevention of neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases”

9:30 am – Reception of participants

10:00 a.m. – Opening session with the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Dr. Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar

10:10 am – Presentation of the NewFood4Thought project – Dr. Narcisa Bandarra, Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA)

10:15 a.m. – Impact of a diet rich in mackerel on Alzheimer’s disease – Professor José Prates, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMV-UL)

10:35 a.m. – Strategies for valuing the lipid fraction of pelagics: production of neuroactive extracts for the prevention/delay of Alzheimer’s disease – Dr. Ana Gomes Bispo, IPMA.

10:50 a.m. – Evaluation of the nutritional potential of mackerel through the study of the composition of minerals, selenium, vitamin B12 and amino acids – Dr. Carla Motta, National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA)

11:05 am – Coffee break

11:35 am – Functional products aimed at the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive aging: Hamburger as a case study – Dr. Cláudia Afonso, IPMA

11:50 a.m. – Diagnostic study on the Omega 3 index in the Portuguese population and its relationship with diet – Dr. Narcisa Bandarra, IPMA

12:10 p.m. – Round table – Representatives of the National Association of the Cold Industry and Food Products Trade (ALIF), the National Association of Canned Fish Industries (ANICP), and Docapesca – Portos e Lotas, SA.

12:50 p.m. – Closing session with the President of the Board of Directors of IPMA, Professor José Guerreiro.
