Lack of Cancer Drugs in Madeira

The Health Service of the Region has responded to a statement released by the JPP, where the party denounced the lack of medicines for cancer patients.

Through a statement, SESARAM states that the medicines in question are in short supply due to a national rupture, so “it is not a specific shortage of the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.”

“The Hospital Drug Formulary contains 2900 pharmaceutical products. Today, September the 4th, one of the medicines that was in short supply arrived.  Its delivery was affected by constraints at the airport. Nevertheless, SESARAM is still waiting for the receipt of two medicines, which due to the increase in consumption and national disruptions, are being apportioned and distributed to the country’s hospitals.”

“The lack of medicines cited by the JPP is not a specific lack of the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital. The medicines in question are in short supply due to the national disruption,” the statement reiterates.

The same source guarantees that “the Regional Health Service, in situations of drug shortage, whenever possible, activates alternatives in conjunction with the attending physician.”

Concluding, the press release said:

“Madeira’s Health Service maintains a strong investment in the area of medicines. Our investment in oncological drugs has grown by 256.76%. In 2015 it was €6,285,046 and in 2023 it was €22,422,386. Overall, more than 90 million euros are spent annually on medicines, through SESARAM, EPERAM and in reimbursements through IASAÚDE.”
