Tourists Continue to Ignore ‘No Entry’ Signs

Although the pedestrian routes are closed, several tourists continue to ignore the signage, climb barriers, and continue walking, oblivious to the danger they are putting themselves and others in.

In the mountainous regions of Ponta do Sol, where the mayor has been following the evolution of the flames, the passage of walkers through Levada Nova and Levada do Moinho has been visible in the distance, precisely in the valley where, further north, the flames continue to rage.

“Yesterday we closed the levadas and people continue to pass the barriers,” said Célia Pessegueiro, considering it “disrespectful” to those fighting the fire. The mayor warned that, due to the fires, there is a constant danger of falling stones and debris, and appealed to everyone to use their common sense.
